She was Edwards’s Web videographer. For $114,000, she turned out video installations (what people a few years ago called webisodes) in an online serial drama. “I have come to the personal conclusion that I actually want the country to see who I am,” Edwards says in the opening scene of “Inspiring Politics,” Hunter’s four-part series. “But I don’t know what the result of that will be.”
This is public relations? The series offers an oddly downbeat narrative that chronicles the candidate’s mounting concern with ’60s-style authenticity and how he might manifest it. It reveals him as a lonely man chronically afraid of sounding like a “used-car salesman,” as he puts it in webisode 4. At times, he sounds downright sick of himself.

Time will tell, but right now Web serials — no matter how revealing, provocative or moving — seem to be a misstep in the evolution of online video. Introduced with fanfare again and again only to miss big viewerships, shows like “Satacracy 88” and “Cataclysmo” have emerged as the slow, conservative, overpriced cousins to the wildly Web-friendly “viral videos” that also arrived around 2005, when bandwidth-happy Web users began to circulate scrap video and comedy clips as if they were chain letters or strep. Top virals — “I Got a Crush . . . on Obama,” “Don’t Tase Me, Bro!” “Chocolate Rain” — never plod. They come off like brush fires, outbursts, accidents, flashes of sudden unmistakable truth.

By contrast, Web serials smack of planning and budgets and all that vestigial Hollywood stuff. The earliest ones were interludes in existing fiction franchises like “Battlestar Galactica” and “The Office.” The natural audience members for serials are obedient and obsessive — the John Edwards supporter who just has to know everything about him, the “Battlestar” viewer who can’t stand a few months’ hiatus from the show. From Charles Dickens’s “Old Curiosity Shop” to radio’s “Shadow” to Fox’s “24,” serials have always attracted completists. Serial fans don’t trawl YouTube for crazy junk they’ve never seen before; they turn to reputable sites for “more information” on their beloved franchises. They’ve seen one installment and feel dutybound to see what comes next.

The producers of Web serials — including the name-brand ones like “Afterworld,” “lonelygirl15” and “quarterlife” — seem forever anxious about their audience numbers, and they crunch and recrunch them. The producers of “lonelygirl15,” a thriller about a teenager stuck in a cult, claim that they have attracted 100 million views over more than 550 episodes. Marshall Herskovitz, the creator of “quarterlife,” a repertory drama about artsy 20-somethings, counters that his show has drawn 10 million views over 36 episodes — 50 percent more, on average, than “lonelygirl15.” This is possible, since the unit of success is the flimsy “view,” meaning virtually any click on any part of a series, anywhere on the Web. But it’s clear that we’re not talking about numbers advertisers can remotely trust. Are there really any hit Web serials?

Just as some people don’t like to receive their humor under the banner of “funny” — their smiles fade at comedy clubs called Chuckles Café or Laugh Lane — I don’t like to watch Web serials as serials. What I loved about “lonelygirl15,” when its status as amateur filmmaking was still unclear, was not so much that I couldn’t tell if it was real or fake but that I could never tell if there would be another one. Poor, beautiful Bree, the housebound heroine, appeared to be uploading videos whenever her home-schooling overlords would permit it. At the end of an episode, you had no idea if she’d survive to make another. This thrill is present in all Web interactions in which a Facebook friend or far-flung colleague or gchat buddy is so there, writing the long 4 a.m. communications about Russia or his cat, until he isn’t. When you kick off an exchange with someone online, you don’t know how many episodes have been ordered, what shape or course the relationship might take or how much of a commitment it requires.

During the Hollywood writers’ strike last fall, new online serials popped up everywhere. In protesting how little money they made online, writers refused to work for movies and TV. They did, however, write for the Web — and more than one press release suggested that the talent of the pros would finally enliven the form. The strike came and went, and I saw some funny one-offs, but no series that rivaled “lonelygirl15.”

Not until recently, at least. In July, Joss Whedon, the television maharishi behind “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly,” started “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” a downloadable series that was conceived during the strike. People went for it. It’s a ’70s pop musical starring Neil Patrick Harris, who is cute and likable and known from TV, as an aspiring supervillain. It mixes wacky sci-fi with stumbling young-adult dating dramedy. “Dr. Horrible” bills itself as the most-downloaded TV series on iTunes. Indeed, iTunes is the only place you can see “Dr. Horrible,” exempting it from the view-based ratings system, the one used by shows like “Roommates,” “The Guild” or the comedy shows of My Damn Channel, which are streamable and not downloadable. An episode of “Dr. Horrible” costs a cruel $1.99, though seen in a download it looks gorgeous — a lush, sound-mixed studio series on par with anything on the networks. What makes it Web-specific, I guess, it that it’s a little weird, but it’s hardly less paranormal than the shows recommended as complementary to “Dr. Horrible” fans: old-media sci-fi like “Stargate,” “New Amsterdam” and “Tin Man.”

The French artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau once decried the high barriers to making movies, suggesting that the cost of cameras, film, editing machines and other equipment had inhibited filmmakers by making them too nervous about bottom lines. “Film will only become art,” he proposed, “when its materials are as inexpensive as paper and pencil.” When Cocteau died in 1963, he must have been confident that his hypothesis would never be tested. But with 13 hours of video uploaded every minute on YouTube, the Cocteau test is now fully under way.

So where’s the true art? I’m not sure. I know I continue to prefer the strange, beautiful, comical and mysterious stuff of YouTube — the unclassifiable stuff — to the laudable efforts at nouveau serials by bona fide directors. But I still believe that, one day, another serial — not called a serial, maybe, and certainly not webisodes — will exploit the eccentricity of the virals and manage to make new and serious jokes about the truth-illusion-truth-illusion of cinéma vérité, which is what “lonelygirl15” once did. With that, the thrill of filmed “reality” will be returned to viewers, as it was in the early days of film, radio and television.

As John Edwards puts it in “Inspiring Politics,” praising the spontaneity of Web video as an antidote to the scripted Hollywood style of contemporary politics: “We’re conditioned to be political. And it’s hard to shed all that. I can be in the middle of being what feels real and authentic to me, and I’ll get into a little reel, you know, in my head. . . . That’s why this” — he indicates Rielle Hunter’s shoestring Web video crew — “I absolutely believe has the potential to change the way people do this, in a very good way. In a very good way.”

Microsoft Faces New Browser Foe in Google

On Tuesday, Google will release a free Web browser called Chrome that the company said would challenge Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, as well as the Firefox browser.

The browser is a universal doorway to the Internet, and the use of Internet software and services is rapidly growing. Increasingly, the browser is also the doorway to the Web on cellphones and other mobile devices, widening the utility of the Web and Web advertising. Google, analysts say, cannot let Microsoft’s dominant share of the browser market go without a direct challenge.

Google already competes with Microsoft in online search and Internet advertising. They both make operating software for cellphones. Google is increasingly competing with Microsoft head-on in software that handles basic productivity like word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and e-mail programs. Google has Web-based software in these markets that are low-cost or free alternatives to Microsoft’s lucrative desktop software.

Despite the frequent clashes with Microsoft — including the role Google played in thwarting an attempted acquisition of Yahoo — Google has come out on top only in search and search advertising. But Google does not have to win the browser war. Strategically, opening yet another front against Microsoft forces it to divert resources to defend franchises.

Now, Chrome heightens the rivalry and marks a shift for Google, which has strongly backed Firefox, the open-source browser that has gained about a fifth of the market against the dominant Internet Explorer.

Google’s browser project has been under way for more than a year, a person close to the company said.

In a brief statement, Microsoft welcomed the new entry and expressed confidence that people would prefer Explorer, which is on every Windows PC sold.

“The browser landscape is highly competitive,” said Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of the Internet Explorer group. “But people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips, respects their personal choices about how they want to browse and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online.”

Google has clashed with Microsoft before, saying it had designed IE to gain ground in search, a market where Google is the runaway leader.

After Microsoft introduced IE 7 in 2006, Google complained that the browser’s search box favored Microsoft’s search service. Microsoft responded and made modifications, and a federal judge overseeing the antitrust consent decree against Microsoft determined that the browser design was not anticompetitive.

The first round of the browser wars in the 1990s led to a sweeping federal antitrust suit against Microsoft for the tactics it used to stifle competition from the commercial pioneer in browsing software, Netscape Communications. A federal appeals court ruled in 2001 that Microsoft had repeatedly violated the nation’s antitrust laws. Microsoft later reached a settlement with the Bush administration, which included some sanctions but left the company free to bundle browsing software with Windows, which runs more than 90 percent of all personal computers.

Microsoft recently stepped up its own browser development efforts, given the increasing importance of the browser and signs that Firefox is nibbling at its lead. Microsoft released a new version, IE8, last week to generally favorable reviews.

Microsoft still holds 73 percent of the browser market, according to Net Applications, a research firm. The market share for Firefox has climbed to 19 percent, while Apple’s Safari has 6 percent.

Chrome also puts Google in competition with an ally, the Mozilla Corporation, which manages the Firefox project. Just last week, Google renewed its deal with Mozilla. Under the arrangement, Google Search is the home page for Firefox and Google is its default search bar, and Google makes substantial payments to Mozilla. The agreement runs through November 2011, and will continue.

Google’s cooperation with Mozilla, however friendly, meant that it was ceding control of the Internet’s vital gateway technology — and the dominant supplier of that technology is its archrival, Microsoft.

Given the increasing importance of the browser and its widening competition with Microsoft, Google’s entry into the market is not surprising, said John Lilly, chief executive of Mozilla.

“It would be more surprising to me if Google didn’t do something in the browser space,” Mr. Lilly said. “After all, Google is 100 percent on the Web.”

Review Sony Ericsson G900 Touch and go

As promised, we are now ready with our exclusive preview of the highly intriguing Sony Ericsson G900, which we had the chance to try out in our office shortly after its announcement at the Mobile World Congress 2008.

Sony Ericsson announced a handful of promissing devices at the Congress this year and after the Sony Ericsson G700 preview yesterday, we're now having a closer look at its bigger brother - the Sony Ericsson G900 UIQ smartphone.

Sony Ericsson G700 official pictures

The Sony Ericsson G900 is physically identical to the G700 with a 2.4" 262K-color TFT display of QVGA resolution. However the G900 has more to offer than its sibling - bringing Wi-Fi support and a 5 megapixel auto focus camera it looks set to cause high-tech high-end excitement.

As with the G700, UMTS support with video calls is also on board, along with stereo Bluetooth and an M2 memory card slot. Sony Ericsson also made a big deal of their Notes applications that allows you to organize your life with electronic yellow Sticky Notes (they come in other colors, too).

Sony Ericsson G700 (bronze) compared to Sony Ericsson G900 (black): the devices have different designs

Sexy is the last thing to call Sony Ericsson G900, but we couldn't resist trying some creative photography on it. It does pull off an occasional beauty shot.

Sony Ericsson G900

The Sony Ericsson G900 measures 106 x 49 x 13 mm and weighs only 99 g - those are the exact same dimensions as the G700, which makes us wonder how Sony Ericsson achieved the same weight and dimensions given the extra features.

Sony Ericsson G900 all over

The UIQ user interface updated

Sony Ericsson have put a great deal of effort in optimizing the UIQ user interface for thumb use. Some controls have gotten bigger - especially the multimedia and camera ones. You have a vast array of user-configurable shortcuts at your disposal to make everyday tasks easier. The Notes application has also received an upgrade and is now among the phone's main organizing features - a welcome change as we prefer notes over to-do lists for keeping track of our daily schedule. The new task manager also makes it easier to control and switch between the currently running applications.

You won't hear us comment on the features of the UIQ smartphone interface here. Those remain the same throughout the Sony Ericsson latest phones and if you are interested in finding out more you're welcome to return to our Sony Ericsson W960 review - all beside the Walkman today screen holds true for the G900.

We've already previewed the Sony Ericsson G700 too, so if you've read that, you are most likely to come across the same features twice. There are differences in the camera part, so don't miss that.

The standby home screen • the main menu and some submenus

Here are the additional interface themes that come preloaded on the G900. As you will notice they don't offer tremendous change, but all of them are more eye pleasing than the default one.

The additional UIQ interface themes of the G900

You probably already know from our G700 preview that one of the biggest changes is the Home screen plug-in. It offers the users a new shortcut bar that can be scrolled horizontally. They are totally user-configurable - you can add more as you wish. Those tabs make life easier for repetitive daily things such as calling home, sending messages or adding to-do tasks. The possibilities are hardly limited.

Of course the traditional Business plug-in is also available.

The new organizing shortcuts are a novelty • the Home screen has the old Business plug-in as well

The Notes application has been upgraded with the Sony Ericsson G900 and is now pitched as a serious organizing application. It has even got a dedicated shortcut key on the keypad.

The notes you create now resemble the sticky notes some of us like to stick around their desk or on the fridge. They can combine drawings, written or typed text and they can change colors for easier sorting.

The Notes applications has received an upgrade

The options don't end here - now you can add alarms to your notes, send them via MMS or Bluetooth, upload them to your blog or file them in separate folders, such as Business, Personal or Urgent. There is however a downgrade too. You cannot use different colors of ink for your drawings as it used to be in the previous UIQ smartphones.

Those upgrades are welcome but the need for a dedicated Notes key on the keypad still remains questionable to us.

You have various options at your disposal

The task manger that comes with the UIQ interface has also been changed. Previously, opening it presented you with a list of recently opened applications, and the actual list of running applications was hidden on a second tab. Now the recent applications tab has disappeared, and the list of running applications appears as a pop-up, really neat and convenient.

The task manager has also received an update

Make more of your multimedia

Sony Ericsson G900 comes with the Media Center that we've seen on some of the latest Sony Ericsson feature phones. It provides one-click access to your photos, music, and video. You are able to sort music by filters as year, genre, albums, tracks, playlists, podcasts, etc. If you want to find a particular song, but know just a part of its name, don't worry, just type it in, and the phone will automatically find and display it.

The Media Center also supports changing the screen orientation. And best of all, both Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 have the MegaBass equalizer preset, so now even Walkman fans can be content.

The Walkman music player is here

The video player has large controls allowing easy thumb operation.

The video player makes good use of the display

Both Sony Ericsson G700 and G900 have built-in stereo FM radio tuners with RDS support and the Sony Ericsson TrackID music recognition service. You need to plug in the headphones in order to use the radio, as they serve as an antenna.

The FM radio interface resembles the one of the music player

Browsing images is as fun as on the Sony Ericsson W890. The Media center photo gallery is a convenient tool for managing a vast collection of camera photos with great customization capabilities. Photo Tags allows you to tag an image with a custom tag of your own thus making filtering easier.

The slideshow function is readily available as soon as you open any image fullscreen. Before they start, you are asked to pick a mood and the handset plays the animated slideshows with background music to suit the chosen mood. The transition style of the slideshow also varies according to the mood.

Browsing images with the Media Center

Welcome to touch focus

The UIQ camera interface we've come to know from previous models was poor on user-friendliness. The Sony Ericsson G900 however comes with a brand new camera that is really intuitive, it's full of helpful hints and most important of all - it's optimized for thumb operation. Unfortunately, the menus available on the viewfinder cannot be operated with the D-pad as a back-up option.

The Sony Ericsson G700 3 megapixel camera lacked auto focus and some advanced camera settings. The situation with the G900 is entirely different. With G900 you get everything the Cyber-shot users get.

With the Sony Ericsson G900 you get digital image stabilization, full Scenes mode, Panorama and Multi-shot shooting mode. What's more, you have the Touch focus feature that allows you to select the subject to be in focus when you are framing your shot.

The revamped camera interface is really easy to operate with fingers and is full of goodies

The most important settings are available straight from the viewfinder, the additional settings menu gives access to options such as picture size, white balance, effects, storage location, and shutter sound (can be turned off).

The additional settings menu is also rather fingerable

We are not that pleased with the camera performance of the Sony Ericsson G900. Firing up the camera is somewhat slow at around 7 seconds, while the shot-to-shot time at high-quality is about another 6 seconds. That's with the auto preview option set to off - and of course you have to remember that the auto focus slows down things a bit. It's also very likely that Sony Ericsson will fix that in the retail version of the handset.

Unfortunately the camera of our G900 prototype is not yet fully finished, much like the one on G700. Cameras usually are the last things that get tuned properly before a handset gets released. This is the reason why we are only offering a few camera samples - the following two are downsized to 1024 x 768 pixels. No other photo editing was done on the samples.

Sony Ericsson G900 camera samples at 1024 x 768 pixels

Here is a full-resolution Sony Ericsson G900 camera sample for you to enjoy.

Sony Ericsson G900 full res camera sample

As far as the Touch focus is concerned, we were eager to test it out. It turned out that the feature works just fine, but we find it more of a marketing gimmick. You can get the same effect by the old trick of focusing and reframing. The trick includes focusing dead center on the subject that needs to be in focus and then keeping the shutter key at half-press you simply reframe the scene to get that extra artistic off-center look. It's as simple as that.

Nevertheless here's a sample that the Touch focus feature works exactly as advertised.

Sony Ericsson G900 Touch focus camera sample

The G900 video recorder however is not upgraded and it still maxes out at 30 fps at QVGA resolution, which just passes acceptable by our standards.

Here is the 30fps Sony Ericsson G900 sample camera video. It's a good guess that video quality or at least the zoom freeze will be fixed later on.

It's got Wi-Fi and an excellent web browser

Sony Ericsson G900 has one crucial advantage over G700 and that is the Wi-Fi support. Add the capable web browser and UMTS support, and the G900 turns out a nice web phone package (among many other things). We would have liked it better if it had HSDPA support, but obviously keeping the cost down has been a priority with both the G700 and G900.

The G900 web browser performs fast and has enough configuration options to make mobile web browsing real fun. You can move the current page around by dragging it with your thumb but it's even faster with the D-pad. With the D-pad, the browser offers supreme speed when scrolling and panning. You can also use the fullscreen or tabbed browsing to make your life easier. Zooming and text searching is also available.

Unfortunately the fullscreen mode is not as full as the one of G700, but that seems to be just a prototype bug - so go easy on this fellow.

Turning on the Wi-Fi connection • the G900 web browser: normal view mode • fullscreen mode • zooming out

Final words

The Sony Ericsson G900 doesn't score as high as the G700 on ergonomics - the memory card slot location and the absence of the two context keys tip the scales in favor of the G700. Yet, it still allows one-handed operation with almost no need for stylus.

The Sony Ericsson G900 has borrowed the best of the Walkman and the Cyber-shot worlds (excluding the xenon flash and the accelerometer) and put Wi-Fi support and touchscreen display on top. With excellent build quality and a presumably easier to swallow price tag (EUR 300) than the Sony Ericsson W960, it surely sounds like a sweet deal.

Coming Soon Third-Gen Zune Hits Europe in 2009

Microsoft has announced that the third generation of Zunes will be released in 2009 and will be heading to Europe first. There’s also some rumors that these devices will enable users to use Zune content and services. The designers of the virtual keyboard felt it was important to have the keyboard actually make a clicking noise when you type away. OK, maybe I’m the only one that finds that unique,I digress. Here is some information from the ThinkGeek site.

This tiny device laser-projects a keyboard on any flat surface… you can then type away accompanied by simulated key click sounds. It really is true future magic at its best. You’ll be turning heads the moment you pull this baby from your pocket and use it to compose an e-mail on your bluetooth enabled PDA or Cell Phone. With 63 keys and and full size QWERTY layout the Laser Virtual Keyboard can approach typing speeds of a standard keyboard… in a size a little larger than a matchbook.

Eureka 12-Amp Upright Vacuum Cleaner With Spin Duster 2 Technology

Studying which genes are active and which are inactive in different cell types helps scientists to understand both how these cells function normally and how they are affected when various genes do not perform properly. In the past, scientists have only been able to conduct these genetic analyses on a few genes at once. With the development of DNA microarray technology, however, scientists can now examine how active thousands of genes are at any given time.

What is DNA microarray technology used for?

Microarray technology will help researchers to learn more about many different diseases, including heart disease, mental illness and infectious diseases, to name only a few. One intense area of microarray research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the study of cancer. In the past, scientists have classified different types of cancers based on the organs in which the tumors develop. With the help of microarray technology, however, they will be able to further classify these types of cancers based on the patterns of gene activity in the tumor cells. Researchers will then be able to design treatment strategies targeted directly to each specific type of cancer. Additionally, by examining the differences in gene activity between untreated and treated tumor cells - for example those that are radiated or oxygen-starved - scientists will understand exactly how different therapies affect tumors and be able to develop more effective treatments.
How does DNA microarray technology work?
DNA microarrays are created by robotic machines that arrange minuscule amounts of hundreds or thousands of gene sequences on a single microscope slide. Researchers have a database of over 40,000 gene sequences that they can use for this purpose. When a gene is activated, cellular machinery begins to copy certain segments of that gene. The resulting product is known as messenger RNA (mRNA), which is the body's template for creating proteins. The mRNA produced by the cell is complementary, and therefore will bind to the original portion of the DNA strand from which it was copied.

To determine which genes are turned on and which are turned off in a given cell, a researcher must first collect the messenger RNA molecules present in that cell. The researcher then labels each mRNA molecule by attaching a fluorescent dye. Next, the researcher places the labeled mRNA onto a DNA microarry slide. The messenger RNA that was present in the cell will then hybridize - or bind - to its complementary DNA on the microarray, leaving its fluorescent tag. A researcher must then use a special scanner to measure the fluorescent areas on the microarray.

If a particular gene is very active, it produces many molecules of messenger RNA, which hybridize to the DNA on the microarry and generate a very bright fluorescent area. Genes that are somewhat active produce fewer mRNAs, which results in dimmer fluorescent spots. If there is no fluorescence, none of the messenger molecules have hybridized to the DNA, indicating that the gene is inactive. Researchers frequently use this technique to examine the activity of various genes at different times. The 4.3-inch touchscreen device is built to replace not just most handhelds but also some PCs, courtesy of its fourth-generation Internet access. The W100K is one of the few devices to support WiBro (known as WiMAX in the West) on the go and pulls data more quickly than some landline connections: it can download up to 13Mbps and has enough upload speed for high-quality video calls with a built-in front camera. A back 2-megapixel camera with autofocus takes on video capture.

The Korean company also sets up the W100K as an in-car companion and supplies it with both a GPS receiver for mapping duties and a DMB tuner for catching over-the-air digital TV in its native Korea. As a media player, the device ships with 8GB of built-in flash and plays H.264, MPEG-4, WMV, and XviD video clips as well as several audio-only formats.

Samsung plans to ship the device soon for the equivalent of $525 in its home country; it has not announced any plans for an international launch, though the anticipated full launch of Sprint's Xohm WiMAX network this year would allow the device to run on an American network without the DMB tuner.

Toshiba Satellite X205 laptops with NVIDIA SLI Technology

Toshiba has rolled out two new laptops with SLI Technology. Part of the Satellite range, the X205-SLi1 and X205-SLi3 are pitched at the avid PC gamer - with extra features to ensure mobility and connectivity.
Both machines are based on an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, although the SLi1 uses the 2GHz T7250 and the SLi3 has the more powerful 2.2GHz T7500. Each has a maximum 4GB DDR2 memory capacity, although both machines only ship with around half of that capacity used. However, 2GB is sometimes considered a "starting capacity" for gaming-orientated machines and is enough to run Vista – as both machines do.

As the SLi3 model is the more expensive of the two, it would have been nice to see Toshiba up its graphics performance over the SLi1. Unfortunately, it's chosen to ship both with Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT GPUs, each with 512MB GDDR3 memory. Toshiba has also crammed two SATA hard drives into each machine, giving the SLi1 240GB and the SLi3 320GB across two equally split-capacity drives.
Each machine has a 17in widescreen display, making them good for watching DVDs. The SLi1 has a lower spec 1440 x 900 resolution, and its counterpart a slightly better 1680 x 1050 resolution. The real bonus of the SLi3 is the Toshiba external USB HDTV tuner, through which users can run games or watch films at either 720p or 1080i, but not "true" HD. Four built-in stereo speakers and a subwoofer are also included in both machines, which may help your games or DVD sound slightly better than average tinny laptop speakers.

Wi-Fi is possible over 802.11 a/g/n and short-range connections over Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with both machines, although Toshiba hasn't opted for version 2.1+EDR, which was recently adopted as the succeeding version by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. To ensure they have all the bells and whistle required, Toshiba has also thrown in a webcam, microphone, and fingerprint reader.

The Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi1 and X205-SLi3 are available now in the USA for $2,000 (£1,000/€1,350) and $2,500 (£1,250/€1,500) respectively. There's no mention of a UK release yet and neither machines appear on Toshiba's UK website.

<p style="margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; The main difference is aesthetic. These are watches you might actually want to wear, whereas the the old MBW-100 was a watch you would only wear if you wanted to get beaten up by the nerd haters.

Aside from looking good, the watches bring some degree of subtlety to modern gadget usage: The OLED display will show the current tune playing on a Sony-Ericsson music phone and you can control volume and skip tracks. The watch will also display caller ID and SMS notifications, and a vibrating alert notifies you of incoming calls. Pretty much any SE phone from the last few years is supported. The MBW-150 Bluetooth watch costs $200.

i-LIMB bionic hand

A new hope has arrived for amputees that would make Luke Skywalker feel right at home: a highly advanced bionic hand controlled by a patient's mind and muscles.

The newly released iLimb is the first prosthetic hand to have fully functional motorized digits that move and bend independently, its makers say. Electrodes taped to the skin transmit signals to tiny motors that power the fingers.

Previous artificial hands had only a thumb and forefinger that worked in a clawlike grasping action. But the new device allows amputees to carry out more delicate movements such as peeling a banana, typing on a computer, or eating with a knife and fork.

The iLimb is also covered by a semitransparent "cosmesis" that is computer modeled to look like human skin.

The technology has been tested by a number of people, including US soldiers who lost limbs in the Iraq war.

The hand, manufactured by Touch Bionics of Scotland, went on sale in Britain for £8,500 (U.S. $17,454). An entirely lifelike version is on sale privately for around £13,000 ($26,695).

Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 and 7000

Microsoft has introduced two new Laser Mice: the Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 and Wireless Laser Mouse 7000, "giving consumers more choice and flexibility in their computing experience." Inspired by the Sword Lion shield, the Lion Square borrows the character of the shield – the impressive face of lion totem, and its spirit, symbolizing strength and courage, to represent the outstanding efficiency of the new launch. The Asus Lion Square incorporates a nickel-plating copper base, four Φ8 copper heat pipes, aluminum wave fins and a 9cm LED inner fan to efficiently lower processor temperatures by 30%. In addition, the Inner fan directs airflow created by the 9cm LED fan to surrounding VRM (voltage regulation modules) – which is critical to processor operations and overall system reliability. These features enable gamers to enjoy safe overclocking of up to 180 W.

The Asus Lion Square deliver quiet and high-performance heat dissipation from the Intel Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Quad Quad-Core CPU and AMD Athlon 64 FX/X2 Dual-Core processors.

LG rolls out KF-510 slider with 3MP and touch controls

LG will debut its new Phone LG-KF510 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona. Based on the existing X600, the phone returns VGA resolution to a 2.8-inch touchscreen, but there no longer appears to be any sort of cellular broadband. Connection types do, however, continue to include GSM, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as a native GPS system. Other hardware in the 650 includes a 500MHz Samsung processor, 256MB of flash storage, and a 2 megapixel camera.

The phone additionally features Windows Mobile with Mobile Office, plus an FM tuner. In some regions an FM transmitter will also be built-in, but North America is likely to be excluded, as the FCC restricts the power of portable transmitters in order to prevent interference. The 650 should launch "worldwide" in black and purple colors, going to market within two to three weeks.

Nokia N96 Media Phone

Nokia finally officially announces the next flagship model of the N-series, the Nokia N96. Serving as the final bow for the Ultra Edition, it blends in a split-screen, context-sensitive touch control system similar to that of the LG Venus: rather than rely on fixed buttons or an entire front touch surface, the Soul includes a small touchscreen area whose buttons change depending on the immediate context for the screen above. When playing music, track controls replace normal commands, Samsung says in an example. The Soul is also the first Samsung handset to sport a themed UI where the entire look and sound can be replaced at once.

The handset is both very camera- and data-focused. A 5-megapixel camera is accompanied by a high-power LED flash as well as by face detection and image stabilization - all features normally reserved for some of the better dedicated cameras, the company says. Transfers are quick with 3G Internet access over HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps downstream; the phone supports North America with quad-band calling over GSM, though whether it also supports 3G in the Western region is unknown. The phone makes heavy use of Google features and supports built-in Gmail and search functions, including a dedicated button at the top level of the interface.

The 12.8mm (0.5in) thick phone is said to be music-savvy with AAC, FM radio, MP3, and WMA support, including protected WMA music stores. Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower audio enhancement technology is also onboard the Soul, which should be available first in Europe by April but is likely to see service in the US through AT&T if left in its current form.

Soul Specifications:
* Connectivity: quad band GSM/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
* Display: 2.2" 16M color QVGA TFT
* Camera: 5 mpxwith autofocus, 4x digital zoom, face recognition, image stabilizer and WDR optimizer, power LED
* FM Radio with RDS
* Google mail
* 15 hours of music playback
* Bluetooth 2.0/USB 2.0
* ICE Power digital power amp by B&O
* microSD memory card slot
* Dimensions: 105.9x49.5x12.9 mm

Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight Edition

Verizon and Nokia teamed up and announced the Nokia 6205 The Dark Knight edition mobile phone, celebrating the upcoming July 18 theatrical release of “The Dark Knight”. it is preloaded with Dark Knight’s wallpapers, voice tones, animated screensavers inspired by the film, and a full movie trailer.
